sometimes i’m a bit hesitant to believe that a new young band has produced an amazing album. i’m not really sure why since it seems to be occurring frequently these days, especially where young british bands are concerned. in any case, the xx has certain done so with their debut record xx. the sexual tension between the voices of romy madley croft and oliver sim is exquisite. combined with their youthful restraint, i am hard pressed to find a dynamic to compare it to. it is a treat to me that this album gives us so much of the two of them singing together in unison. and the simple early cure inspired, sometimes referential, guitar and bass lines just feel like home to me.

the mashup of kenneth anger imagery makes this video for heavy cross a necessary addition to the index.
it was rory phillips‘ excellent mix for the durrr podcast, rory phillips live a durrr paris that originally hooked me on this track by gossip.

heroin and your veins
nausea, by heroin and your veins is one of my favorite albums of last year. each track so effectively creates a dark and mysterious atmosphere that the album seems to belong to its own film noir world.
i was pleased to discover their video collection on vimeo. many of the video appear to shot on a digital camera. at best, the dark, grainy, isolated scenes provide the perfect visual for dreary, dreamy sound world of the songs.
max hattler
i’m so taken by this new animation loop by max hattler. everything on max’s vimeo page seems to be well worth a look. whereas this new piece has a special magic that is not quite rivaled by his previous works and colaborations, after watching 1923 for the first time yesterday, i started looking at his other videos and got sucked into nearly all of them. it was an afternoon well spent. i look forward to the release of 1925.

lesage’s paintings are amazing. i love the thematic parallels to Carl Jung’s mandala painting in the Red Book which i recently saw exhibited at the rubin museum of art.

i’ve been hooked on this track since i first heard the skream remix on the Vunzig Soundsystem – P.E.P. Mix a few weeks ago, but i hadn’t yet gotten around to teasing the artist’s name out of the track list. fortunately, when i asked a friend this evening what they’ve been listening to, the name la roux came up.

this one gets posted primarily for the pop art supersaturated video, though i’d rate the track as pretty good for straight down the center mainstream r&b. i appreciate the fact that the attitude doesn’t back down one bit. my peripheral web crawl didn’t yield any remixes of note. may not be applicable to the subject mater…

devil’s trident
telepathe must be doing something right. their track devil’s trident seems to have inspired a plethora of outstanding videos and remixes. though it does not appear to be an official video, christopher chambers‘ video, comprised of found VHS footage, set to the original version of devil’s trident is pretty amazing. but the teengirl fantasy remix and accompanying video by mark brown are my personal favorites.
